Wakelin was born in 1939 in Brighton, Sussex. He was discovered on the local singing circuit by Robin Blanchflower, who launched Carl Douglas' career. In 1974, Wakelin got the idea to write a song about a legendary boxing match, The Rumble in the Jungle, between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman that would take place on October 30, 1974 in Zaire.
