Lions are large, carnivorous felines that are native to Africa and parts of Asia. They are the second-largest living cat species, after tigers. Lions are social animals and live in groups called prides, which consist of related females and their offspring, as well as a few males. Lions are apex predators, meaning they are at the top of the food chain and have no natural predators of their own. They are known for their distinctive mane, which is a fringe of long hair that encircles the head and neck of males. Lions are powerful hunters and are known to take down large prey, such as wildebeest and zebras, in coordinated group efforts. However, they are also known to scavenge when necessary. In recent years, lions have faced significant declines in their populations due to habitat loss, poaching, and conflict with humans.
