On the evening of April 14, 1865, Abraham Lincoln was attending a play at Ford's Theater in Washington D.C. The president's box, situated on the balcony level, offered a clear view of the stage. Sneaking into the theater's backstage, Confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth silently advanced towards the presidential box. Although Lincoln's bodyguard, John F. Parker, should have been vigilant, he had been allowed to leave due to perceived low threats. Booth seized the opportunity, approaching Lincoln from behind and firing a single shot into the back of his head, severing his spinal cord. The gunshot's sound startled the audience, causing chaos and panic. Booth then leaped from the president's box onto the stage, shouting "Sic semper tyrannis" (thus always to tyrants) as he landed. Managing to escape through a side door, he vanished into the night.
