Mount Everest, the highest mountain on Earth, stands at 8,848.86 meters (29,031.7 feet) above sea level. It is located in the Himalayas on the border between Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. Everest is part of the larger Himalayan mountain range, which was formed millions of years ago as the Indian subcontinent collided with the Eurasian Plate.
The mountain was first summited on May 29, 1953, by Sir Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa of Nepal, as part of a British expedition. Climbing Everest has since become a popular yet extremely challenging activity, attracting mountaineers from around the world.
The climb to the summit is highly dangerous, with risks like avalanches, extreme cold, low oxygen levels, and the "death zone" above 8,000 meters, where the body cannot acclimate to the lack of oxygen. Many climbers attempt the ascent, but not all succeed, and some lose their lives in the process. Despite the dangers, the allure of standing on top of the world continues to draw adventurers.
