RunwayAir Canada Flight 759 Incident
On July 7, 2017, Air Canada Flight 759, an Airbus A320 traveling from Toronto to San Francisco, narrowly avoided a catastrophic accident. The flight was cleared to land on Runway 28R at San Francisco International Airport (SFO), but the pilots mistakenly lined up for Taxiway C, where four fully loaded aircraft were waiting for takeoff.
Had the plane landed on the taxiway, it could have resulted in one of the worst aviation disasters in history. Fortunately, air traffic controllers and other pilots quickly noticed the mistake and alerted the Air Canada pilots, who aborted the landing at the last moment and initiated a go-around.
Investigations revealed that the pilots misinterpreted the runway lights at night, leading to the dangerous situation. Thankfully, no injuries or damages occurred, but this incident remains one of the most serious near-miss events in aviation history.
