The Kalma (also spelled as Kalima) refers to a set of Islamic declarations of faith. The term is most commonly used to refer to the "Shahada," the Islamic testimony of faith, but it can also encompass other significant phrases or declarations in Islam. Here’s a breakdown of the most important Kalmas: Shahada (Kalma Tayyibah): Text: "أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له وأشهد أن محمدًا عبده ورسوله" Translation: "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His servant and messenger." Significance: The Shahada is the most important declaration in Islam, affirming the oneness of Allah and the prophethood of Muhammad (PBUH). It is the fundamental creed of a Muslim and is recited by those embracing Islam. Kalma Tamjid: Text: "سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَلَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ" Translation: "Glory be to Allah, and praise be to Allah; there is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest." Significance: This Kalma is used to praise Allah, highlighting His perfection and supremacy. Kalma Tawheed: Text: "لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ" Translation: "There is no god but Allah, He is One, and He has no partners." Significance: It emphasizes the concept of Tawhid (the oneness of Allah), a core principle in Islam. Kalma Istighfar: Text: "أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ رَبِّي مِن كُلِّ ذَنْبٍ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ" Translation: "I ask forgiveness from Allah, my Lord, for all my sins and turn to Him in repentance." Significance: A declaration of seeking forgiveness from Allah, asking for mercy and repentance for one's sins. Kalma Radde Kuffar: Text: "اللهم إني أعوذ بك من الشرك والشركاء" Translation: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from polytheism and from those who associate others with You." Significance: A prayer for protection from shirk (associating partners with Allah). Each of these Kalmas serves to reinforce key tenets of faith and worship in Islam, with the core emphasis on the oneness of Allah and the guidance of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). They are often recited by Muslims during prayers and throughout their daily lives to strengthen their connection with Allah.
