The Winter Groove is a man-made canal connecting the Moika and Neva rivers. It was dug in 1718-1719 near the Winter Palace of Peter the Great, which later got its name. Thanks to this waterway, the emperor could board a boat literally at the threshold of his house. Immediately after the Winter Trench was dug, two drawbridges were built across it, now they are called the 1st Winter and the Hermitage.
